FAQ

Why iKnolio?

Nowadays in our daily life we are inundated with immense volumes of new information: some of it we need right away, some of it later, and many of us would like to make a note of information we receive and file it till we need it at that later time. We created this service for these types of situations – to help those who want to file their personal notes, share them with friends, or store them for further use.

This is for situations when we find information that will probably be useful and interesting someday, but we have no idea where to file it. That’s the issue our service can resolve: here you can always and at any time save valuable information from any computer connected to the Internet. And even information that may not necessarily be important for you personally as you can always share your knowledge with friends.

We make a great effort to ensure that every record is properly stored using our service and that it will be accessible anytime you need it, even many years later.

How much does it cost?

Nothing! The service is totally free for you.

What do I need to use the iKnolio?

All you need to use this service is a modern Web browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or something similar. We highly recommend using Firefox. In any case you won’t have to install additional software.

How do I save my information?

To add a new note you must register on the website, after which you will see an “Add note” button. In the new window you enter a title for the note, its text and the tags identifying your record. If the record contains private information make sure you check the “private record” box.

We are working on different ways to input of information – soon you’ll be able to add records via email, IM, desktop applications, etc.

What is the purpose of attaching tags to a record?

By using tags you mark the area to which the newly created record belongs. When looking through the list of records on the right you will see a list of tags you utilized and by selecting one of them (or a combination thereof) the service will show which records relate to this tag.

We believe that such a method (use of tags) enables you to sort your notes. This will facilitate your search of notes at a much later date when their will really be a lot of them. You can assign any tags to your records that you feel will identify your record and help you find it as easily as possible.

But regardless of whichever tags you may have you can do a general search of the site if you wish to do so.

How many records can I store?

We place no limitations on the number and volume of your records and you may store a reasonable number of notes. However we make sure the service is used properly and will block an account that contains a larger volume of information than for which our service is intended (e.g., we may block an account that uses the service as a file archive for music, films etc., or an account that is publicly storing records that violate laws or infringe on the rights of others), but we hope that such situations don’t actually arise.

What is the maximum size of a single record?

Currently we limit the size of a record to 0.5Mb which is approximately equivalent to a very thick book; therefore you will probably not notice any limitations in practice. Such restrictions are made because we believe that no one will need to write a text of such huge size and that, if this does occur, it will only be in the event of an error. However, if you think that the volume size is not sufficient please write to us – we are always ready to meet the needs of our users and perhaps together we will make the service even more convenient for you by changing this restriction.

Can I use iKnolio without Internet access?

To access the service you will need an Internet connection, but the records already created will always be stored even if you’re currently not online. We are working diligently to simplify your access to your records in the future even without access to the website itself.

Why do I need this service if I can store my records on a PC?

Keeping records on a personal computer is convenient if you have only one, if it is always accessible, and if you have no intention to replace it or to use the records on another computer. But you must admit that this would be a rather unique situation. Very often you use different computers, for instance one at home and another one at work. Likewise you may replace your computer or your home PC may break, or you may urgently need something while away from home while enjoying the company of friends, or even while you’re out and about. So, in this case rest assured that everything you need is being stored online and that you may use it at any time.

I’ve found an error in this service and want to inform you. How do I do this?

You may always visit http://iknolio.com/contacts and fill in the error notification form or write a message to support@iknolio.com. We will certainly take note of your letter and correct the error as soon as possible. If you send a letter please indicate IKNOLIO_NO_SPAM somewhere in the text to make sure the letter reaches us.

Why should I write a public note that everyone is able to see?

You may store records as you wish either only for your own use or you may allow others to view them.

Many records do not include any personal information, confidential data etc. Therefore why not share something that is interesting both for you and your friends and other visitors? Most people will be able to find something of interest. If you noted down your grandma’s favourite pie recipe many visitors will be grateful when they find it and try to bake this delicious pastry themselves. Or if you are a software developer and know how to solve a problem you have dealt with for the last two nights and you know for sure that you aren’t the only one that has come up against such a problem, then post your solution for public use and many people will thank you.

However, if you store something personal e.g., your friend’s address/phone number, password to your PC, or even a paragraph from a book purchased in a local store, such a record shouldn’t be made public. In the first two instances because this is all your private information, while in the second instance the text is the property of the author and you have no right to publish the text without the author’s prior consent.

Do you have other questions?

We are always available to communicate with our users, and you may visit http://iknolio.com/contacts at any time and send your questions using the provided form. Or you may write a letter to support@iknolio.com. We will most certainly read your letter and reply as soon as possible. If you send a letter please indicate IKNOLIO_NO_SPAM somewhere in the text to make sure the letter reaches us.
